About Sean

I am passionate about helping people develop the insight and learn the skills to experience healthy connected relationships, and assisting them in dealing with unfinished business arising from past trauma.

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (#2676) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, with many years of experience in group psycho-education, conflict management, compassionate communication training, and clinical counselling.

I have counselled in a variety of settings including a Counselling Centre, a Wellness Centre, a Church, an Employee Assistance Programme, and various private practices.

My counselling model is person-centred as I believe that my clients are the focus of the healing process, and that the majority of the healing takes place between sessions. My life experience has taught me about relationships in a variety of settings, and provides me with the opportunity to use compassionate communication skills.

My birth place is Johannesburg, South Africa, where I grew up and received my business education. I moved to Canada in 1986 and have been a Canadian citizen for 20 years.

My first career before psychology included an academic background in enterprise risk, together with years of experience in corporate life as an executive, which led me to the fields of psychology and counselling. I enjoyed my years in public accounting & auditing and financial institutions, yet I was aware of the pain experienced by people in all functions and at all levels within a hierarchical corporation. I believe that when people experience conflict and frustration in their career, it impacts their non-corporate life and vice-versa. Consequently I facilitated and taught conflict management and compassionate communication during the latter part of my corporate career. Both of these techniques helped teams of people work more effectively and gain awareness of how their personalities impacted their work team health and functioning. This experience ignited a passion in me to help people with relationships, especially in the business area of life.

My personal experience of counselling during two crises in my life were so healing for me, that I was convinced of the benefits. These experiences helped me process issues around my worldview, relationship with myself and grief arising from loss of family. My first marriage and divorce, and my current marriage with my life partner have taught me and continue to teach me about romantic relationships.

My spiritual journey has given me great awareness of what constitutes a human being psychically, emotionally and mentally, as well as the connection with the non-material aspects of life. I have gained awareness of self at the most fundamental roots and this has given me a broader awareness of how all human beings function at this fundamental level. My greatest learning is how identical we are in our connectedness to each other and to the world of spirit.

My clinical training includes:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing);
  • Nonviolent Communication;
  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy;
  • OEI (One Eye Integration).
